Microsoft recently released an update for Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 which prevents SafeDisc protected games, including Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader, from working correctly.

When running Stronghold or Stronghold Crusader either nothing will happen or you will receive the following message:

Access Denied: Please login with administrator privileges and try again.

Running the Windows Compatibility Wizard does not fix the issue.

Steam will happily issue a refund for a game for any reason if the request meets the following criteria:


1) the request is made within 14 days of purchase


2) the title has been played for less than 2 hours

The following resolutions are supported by Stronghold HD & Crusader HD

These resolutions will only be available providing your graphics card and monitor can support them.


If you own a monitor with G-Sync functions and experience crashes with Stronghold. Please switch off the G-Sync function.

You can do this by following these instructions -

1. Open Nvidia Control Panel
2. Click on the + to expand the Display section
3. Select "Set up G-SYNC"
4. Uncheck this box to disable G-Sync.

To activate the cheat codes press the Shift+Alt+A while in the Main Menu. Once the cheat codes have been activated, you can select the cheat you wish to use, while playing a mission, by holding down the keys listed below.

Alt+C - Access to all campaign missions at the selection screen
Alt+K - Free building (no resources required)
Alt+X - Add 100 popularity and 1000 gold

This error is usually caused by a damaged disk; you may want to try cleaning the disk first and then try to reinstall Stronghold. If this fails you could attempt to copy the disk to the hard drive. Using a program, such as this one to attempt to get the data from the damaged area of the disk:

If all else fails return the game to the retailer and get a replacement.

1. Delete the config file. You will find this file in the following location - C:\Users\<user>\Documents\Stronghold

2. Run the game and quit.

3. Re-run Stronghold and it may try to run at 800x600 you can then change resolution yourself.

Older versions of the game need to be played using an account with administrator privileges. Check this article to find out more about windows user accounts.

If your game is displayed incorrectly and doesn't fill the whole screen.  This problem maybe caused by Large (150%) DPI settings

To resolve the problem, do the following - 

Locate the exe - C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stronghold
Right click on the Stronghold.exe file.
Click on the Compatibility tab.
Tick 'Display display scaling on high DPI settings'
Click on OK.

Yes, press ALT & Q while in game and the screenshot will be placed in the root of your Stronghold folder as a bitmap file called screen_capture.bmp.

Backup your save games folder (Default: C:\Program files\Firefly Studios\Stronghold\saves\) and the stronghold.cfg file (Default: C:\Program files\Firefly Studios\Stronghold\stronghold.cfg). If you have created any maps they will be stored in your maps folder (Default: C:\Program files\Firefly Studios\Stronghold\ maps\).

 Yes, you can delete the stockpile and place it anywhere you want. Be careful when deleting your stockpile as you will lose any goods stored on it.

If you download the patch for the game and install it in English all your game text will be English now, but the speech will stay in the original language.
