Please first check that you have received the achievement "Welcome to the Family" in Steam or GOG Galaxy.

If you have not received the achievement, but the game says your email address has been verified, please follow these steps:

  1. Open your options.xml file in a text editor, by default this is located in \Document\Stronghold Warlords\Profiles\options.xml
  2. Find the section that says "send_state" on line 8.
  3. If the file says "send_state=3" please change it to "send_state=2"
  4. Save the file
  5. Launch the game
  6. This should now award you the "Welcome to the Family" achievement and unlock your skins.

Steam Version

To change the in-game language, right click on Stronghold Crusader 2/Stronghold Warlords in your Steam Library and select Properties. Now select the Languages tab, open the dropdown menu and select the desired language. The language files will then download automatically.

GOG Version

To change the in-game language, open your GOG Galaxy client and click on Stronghold Crusader 2/Stronghold Warlords. Click on the More button and select the Language Setup option. This will open a separate window for you to select the languages as you wish. Save and then exit.

Stronghold Crusader 2/Stronghold Warlords is sold in a number of regions around the world.  Different regions offer different language versions, so not all languages may be available for you to choose from.

Please be aware of keystores offering discounts for Stronghold Crusader 2/Stronghold Warlords keys which only contain a limited selection of languages.

We only sell our game through Steam, GOG and selected digital and retail partners.  It is very likely that the version being offered by the keystore is a version which has been restricted to specific languages.  As a result this version will only contain text and audio files specific to those languages.  If you purchased a Stronghold Crusader 2/Stronghold Warlords key from a keystore and it is missing languages that were listed on the keystore product page, please contact the keystore.

If you experience issues with the game not starting correctly, please follow the following troubleshooting steps:

1) Do you have an anti-virus program installed on your computer?

Lots of games have problems with overprotective anti-virus programs.  If you are using anti-virus please make sure Stronghold Warlords has been added to your list of exceptions.  Please consult your anti-virus manual for instructions on how to do this.  The default installation path for the Stronghold Warlords game file is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stronghold Warlords\bin\win32_release\StrongholdWarlords.exe

2) Make sure you have installed the prerequisite files required to run Stronghold Warlords

  • Latest DirectX files:
  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (MFC Security Update):
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stronghold Warlords\resources\redist\vcredist_2010_x86.exe *
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stronghold Warlords\resources\redist\vcredist_2019_x86.exe

3) Verify your Stronghold Warlords files

  1. Login to the Steam client
  2. Within Library, right-click on Stronghold Warlords and select Properties
  3. Select the Local Files tab and click the Verify Integrity of Game Cache... button.
  4. Steam will check all the game files were downloaded correctly. This process may take several minutes. If any files are missing Steam will download them the next time you run the game.

4) Delete your Stronghold Warlords initialisation file

Locate your C:\Users\[User]\Documents\Stronghold Warlords\Profiles folder and delete options.xml.  This will force Stronghold Warlords to redetect your computer settings again when loading the game.

5) Create a new local user account

Some errors occur because of a problem with the current Windows local user account.  Create a new local user account using the following instructions:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/instantanswers/5de907f1-f8ba-4fd9-a89d-efd23fee918c/create-a-local-user-account-in-windows-10

Run Stronghold Warlords in the new local user account.

6) Use the Windows System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted Windows system files

System File Checker is a utility in Windows that allows users to scan for corruptions in Windows system files and restore corrupted files. This article describes how to run the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to scan your system files and to repair missing or corrupted system files.

* - this is the default Steam install location for Stronghold Crusader 2

Some players have reported that the game does not allow them to load and save games properly. This appears to be because the game cannot access their Documents\Stronghold Warlords folder for some unknown reason. As a result we have included a method to allow players to change the directory in which Stronghold Warlords stores all options, save games, maps etc.

In order to use this, players can edit the file in \bin\win32_release\options_override.xml located in their installed directory.

The file contains a single parameter: <override user_data_path="" />

To change the directory, edit the file so that the path to the new directory in which you want to save is between the quotations. For example, to save to your desktop, change it to:

<override user_data_path="C:\Users\username\Desktop" />

When using this option, a new "Stronghold Warlords" directory will be created in the directory specified i.e. if you specify "c:\users\documents\games" then the game will create a "c:\users\documents\games\Stronghold Warlords" directory if it doesn't already exist.

WARNING: Be very careful! The game will attempt to read and write files from the specified directory. Use at your own risk!

To use the default directory, leave it blank or delete the options_override.xml file

IMPORTANT: We strongly suggest only using this override if absolutely necessary, in cases which the default directory cannot be used. If you have no issues with saving any options/progress/save games with Stronghold Warlords, do not use this override option.

PLEASE NOTE: Steam Cloud will NOT work if you use an override path. Steam Cloud only works with the Documents\Stronghold Warlords folder.

Autosaves are stored in a subfolder of your Saved Games folder. These are located in

\Documents\Stronghold Warlords\Saved Games\Autosaves

To load the autosaves in game, please copy the files from \Autosaves to \Saved Games.

If your game is not creating autosaves, please do the following.

  1. Start Stronghold: Warlords
  2. Go to Single Player > Custom Skirmish
  3. Select any map and any AI enemy
  4. Open Advanced Options
  5. Set the 'Autosave Interval' dropdown to '5 m'
  6. Exit Advanced Options
  7. Start the game

The game will now create an autosave every 5 minutes in both custom skirmish and campaign missions.

The move is included in your Steam library. At the top of your Steam library, make sure that "Videos" is checked in the dropdown. When videos is checked, you will see the "Making Of" documentary listed and can watch it through Steam.
