After upgrading to Windows 10 you are experiencing issues with an offset mouse pointer or resolution issues.

Delete the options.xml file located within -
C:\Users\<USER>\Documents\Stronghold Crusader 2\Profiles

and run the game as normal.

You should be able to avoid this error message if you run the setup.exe program directly from the DVD or CD. The setup.exe is located within the Disk1 folder on the CD or DVD for the game.


In order to create a DxDiag file you will need to run a dxdiag report

To run a dxdiag report follow the steps below:

  1. If you are running Windows XP or higher go to your task bar.
  2. Click on, "Start Button".
  3. Click on, "Run".
  4. In the pop-up window enter dxdiag and hit ok.
  5. The DirectX Diagnostic Tool pop-up window should appear.
  6. Click on, "Save all information".
  7. Save As" window should be present.
  8. Click on, "Save" (The file should be saved to your desktop as dxdiag.txt)
  9. Exit the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.
  10. You can now attach the file to an email or to a ticket and submit it. 

Aside from verifying your game cache and checking your connection with Steam, you may also need to manually run secondary installers required by this game.

1. Exit Steam entirely.

2. Browse to your Stronghold Crusader 2 installation folder (Usually C:\Program files\Steam\Steamapps\common\Stronghold Crusader 2\)

3. Run the following installers:

...\steamapps\common\Stronghold Crusader 2\resources\directx\DXSETUP.exe
...\Steamapps\common\Stronghold Crusader 2\resources\redist\vcredist_x86.exe
...\Steamapps\common\Stronghold Crusader 2\resources\redist\vcredist_2008_x86.exe

Reboot your computer and test any issues again.

The application AVG Anti Virus is detecting a false positive, Crusader 2 doesn't contain a virus. Is displayed in the image below:

Please select Ignore Threat.  If this doesn't work or you want to allow Crusader access, you can do the following.

1. Open AVG.

2. Select Options.

3.Select Advanced Settings.

4. Select Update, Exceptions and 'Add Exception'

5. Browse to your Steam folder and select 'Add File'

The default location could be :

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stronghold Crusader 2\bin\win32_release\Crusader2.exe

You can't access your save game files from the Campaigns or  Trails, can't access your shields or your name requires entering each time you run the game.  


To Resolve this issue -

Stronghold Crusader 2 creates save games and other profile information in the Documents\Stronghold Crusader 2 folder. If the game cannot access that folder for some reason, this will create problems saving games etc.

Rename the Documents\Stronghold Crusader 2 folder and when the game next runs a new folder will be created, then you can move the contents of your old Stronghold Crusader 2 folder into the new one.

If you are experiencing issues with no sound in-game, please work though the following steps -

1. Verify Game Cache


  • Open the Steam Client
  • Right-Click on Stronghold Crusader 2 in your Library
  • Select 'Local Files' and then 'Verify Integrity of game cache'


  • Open the GOG Galaxy client
  • Click on Stronghold Crusader 2 in your game library
  • Click on the "MORE" button
Hover over manage in the drop-down menu and select Verify/Repair

2. Run as Admin
  • Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
  • Tick the box next to the text - ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for:’
  • Right click on the game .exe file and select Properties, click on Compatibility.
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\<Game>
  • Locate the game .exe and type - File Explorer into the Search bar and then copy and paste this line into the File Explorer search bar -
3. Download and Update DirectX 9.0c

Please open the following link and download the DirectX update -

4. Check the Sound Settings in-game to ensure none of the sounds settings are set too low or at zero.

5. Delete the game config file.

Exit the game and locate the configuration file.  Delete this file and reload the game.

6. Delete local content and reinstall

  • Click the "Library" tab at the top of the screen.
  • On the left-hand side of the screen, there will be a listing for the (game).  Select the game you would like to uninstall.
  • Right click the game and select "Delete Local Content..."
  • A confirmation box will pop up. Click the "Delete" button. Your game will start uninstalling.

  • Once the game has been uninstalled, select [game] and click install button in the page dedicated to your game.

  • Processor: Intel® Core™ i5 or equivalent

  • Memory: 8 GB RAM

  • Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 460 1GB or AMD Radeon™ HD 5830 1GB or better

  • DirectX: Version 9.0c

  • Network: Broadband Internet connection

  • Hard Drive: 4 GB available space


Disk Read or Write Error

When installing or updating a game, Steam displays an error message:


  • "An error occurred while updating [game title]"
  • "An error occurred while installing [game title]"

Either of these messages contains the following detail in parentheses: "disk read error" or "disk write error."


If you are have AVG 2015 installed, deactivating it for the duration of the installation of the update/installation should allow the update or installation to proceed normally.
