Some players have reported that the game does not allow them to load and save games properly. This appears to be because the game cannot access their Documents\Stronghold Crusader 2 folder for some unknown reason. As a result we have included a method to allow players to change the directory in which Stronghold Crusader 2 stores all options, save games, maps etc.

In order to use this, players can edit the file in \bin\win32_release\options_override.xml located in their installed directory.

The file contains a single parameter: <override user_data_path="" />

To change the directory, edit the file so that the path to the new directory in which you want to save is between the quotations. For example, to save to your desktop, change it to:

<override user_data_path="C:\Users\username\Desktop" />

When using this option, a new "Stronghold Crusader 2" directory will be created in the directory specified i.e. if you specify "c:\users\documents\games" then the game will create a "c:\users\documents\games\Stronghold Crusader 2" directory if it doesn't already exist.

WARNING: Be very careful! The game will attempt to read and write files from the specified directory. Use at your own risk!

To use the default directory, leave it blank or delete the options_override.xml file

IMPORTANT: We strongly suggest only using this override if absolutely necessary, in cases which the default directory cannot be used. If you have no issues with saving any options/progress/save games with Stronghold Crusader 2, do not use this override option.

PLEASE NOTE: Steam Cloud will NOT work if you use an override path. Steam Cloud only works with the Documents\Stronghold Crusader 2 folder.

If you get this error - 'Failed to initialize the engine', try this:

1: Go into C:\Users\[your username]\Documents\Stronghold Crusader 2 folder
2: Backup options.xml
3: Open options.xml
4: Alter fullscreen="true" to fullscreen="false"
5: Save options.xml

Run the game - seems the -windowed in steam has absolutely no effect on the game window, and that must be changed in the game.

The Stronghold Crusader 2 Map Editor is located in the Library/Tools menu within Steam. You must install the Stronghold Crusader 2 game before you install the map editor.

If you experience issues with the map editor not starting correctly, please follow the following troubleshooting steps:

1) Make sure you have installed the prerequistite files required to run Stronghold Crusader 2 Map Editor

2) Check your anti-vius software

Some anti-virus software can be overprotective and may prevent Stronghold Crusader 2 from running.

Please either make C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stronghold Crusader 2\bin\win32_release\MapEditor.exe * an exception in your firewall software or disable your anti-virus software when trying to run Stronghold Crusader 2.

* this is the default Steam installation path for the game

If the text in your copy of Stronghold Crusader 2 appears like the image below then the language files are missing.

To resolve the problem please verify the integrity of you games cache and restart steam

This action will check that your game has all the required files for it to run smoothly. If any files are missing they will be downloaded automatically over Steam.

You can do this by doing the following:

  1. Load Steam.
  2. From the Library section, right-click on the game and select Properties from the menu.
  3. Select the Local files tab and click the Verify integrity of game cache... button.
  4. Steam will verify the game's files - this process may take several minutes.

The full instructions on verifying your game cache can be found here.

Co-op isn’t a separate game mode, it is a part of Multiplayer.

To host a Co-op game, go to Multiplayer, select the Host game tab and create a multiplayer game.  Wait for other players to join your game.

Once someone has joined, you can drag one player on top of another player to form a team.

You can then drag one team mate on top of the other team mate to form a co-op team (you will see a linked icon).

Computer A.I. can be added to a team but cannot be added to a co-op team.

While the current release version is only available for Windows, we are hoping to develop a MAC and Linux version in the future. Due to various factors determining the timeline for these ports we are unable to make any predictions at this stage, but we will announce any updates regarding further platforms.

Yes, there is a small tutorial campaign that teaches you the basics of the game mechanics. There are also three learning campaigns, with each one set out to familiarise the player with the different factions and aspects of gameplay. The learning campaigns aim to prepare the player with the skill set required to master the Skirmish Trails and Multiplayer matches.

No, Stronghold Crusader 2 Multiplayer will require Steam to be online.

When creating teams for single player missions in Stronghold Crusader 2 maps, you need to access the 'Teams' section under the 'Factions tab'. Here you can assign numerous AI into teams, though you cannot create mixed alliances between the different lords. For example: You could not assign yourself or another lord to be in two separate teams or to be aligned with every other lord on the map, as there needs to be at least two clearly defined groups. These teams are not defined through the Event editor.

If you are trying to assign teams in Multiplayer or Skirmish maps, it is just done through the in-game lobby system. Multiple teams can be set up quite easily by just dragging one lord over another lord, though this still means that you cannot have a single lord in multiple teams, he /she can only only be part of one faction.

If you are missing the Shields from registering your email address in the options screen, you may need to delete the options.xml file located here:

C:\Users\<USER>\Documents\Stronghold Crusader 2\Profiles

and re-enter an email address and verify the link.

Some players have reported that the game fails to launch with a KERNALBASE.dll error reported in the Windows Event Viewer.

Often this error occurs because of a problem with the current Windows local user account.  The best way to fix this is to create a new local user account using the following instructions:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/instantanswers/5de907f1-f8ba-4fd9-a89d-efd23fee918c/create-a-local-user-account-in-windows-10

Run Stronghold Crusader 2 in the new local user account and the game should now launch correctly.
